Fatal Times Square car crash death of Alyssa Elsman – Obituary

Alyssa Elsman, an 18-year-old tourist from Michigan, was tragically killed when a vehicle sped onto a crowded sidewalk in Times Square, New York City, on a Thursday just before noon. The car, driven by a man reportedly under the influence of synthetic marijuana, struck 23 pedestrians before crashing into a metal barrier.

Alyssa had been walking with her 13-year-old sister, who was among those injured in the incident. The sisters were visiting the city when the driver made a sharp turn from 42nd Street onto Seventh Avenue, continuing for three blocks on the sidewalk before the crash occurred.

Elsman had graduated from Portage Central High School the previous summer. Her former principal, Eric Alburtus, remembered her as a remarkable and much-loved student, stating that her loss would be deeply felt by all who knew her.

Authorities quickly detained the driver at the scene. The investigation confirmed he was impaired at the time of the crash.
