Fatal Las Vegas pedestrian crash death of Elijah Givens – Obituary

Elijah Givens, 58, lost his life early Sunday morning after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street at the intersection of Decatur Boulevard and Alta Drive in Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

 

The crash occurred just before 3:30 a.m. on May 11. Surveillance footage captured a black Mercedes-Benz traveling northbound at high speed before hitting Givens, who was reportedly crossing against the signal. The vehicle did not stop and continued moving after the collision.

 

Maurice Washington, a 45-year-old corrections officer for the city of Las Vegas, was later identified as the driver. According to police, Washington returned to the scene after initially leaving and admitted he struck something while driving. He said he had parked nearby and called his mother rather than dialing 911, telling officers he was afraid.

 

Officers observed signs of alcohol impairment, including slurred speech and the odor of alcohol, and took Washington into custody. He later told detectives he had been drinking at a hookah lounge before the crash and was unsure at first what he had hit.

 

Washington has been charged with driving under the influence and failing to stop at the scene of a deadly accident. He posted bond after a $250,000 bail was set and is
