Fatal Topeka shooting death of Kathleen Hayes – Obituary
Kathleen Hayes, 40, was confirmed on Wednesday as the seventh homicide victim in Topeka for the year 2025, following a fatal shooting that took place on Monday morning in the Highland Park neighborhood.
Authorities reported that Hayes was killed after a disturbance erupted around 8:45 a.m. at a two-story yellow residence located at 2700 S.E. Minnesota Avenue. When police arrived at the scene, they found Hayes suffering from fatal gunshot wounds and she was pronounced dead.
During a Wednesday press conference, Topeka Police identified the suspected shooter as 47-year-old Anthony Marshall Jr., also of Topeka. Investigators said Hayes and Marshall were acquainted.
Just minutes after the shooting, Marshall was also named as the suspect in an armed robbery at an Equity Bank branch on S.W. 29th Street.
Marshall later led officers on a high-speed chase involving the Kansas Highway Patrol on Interstate 135 in McPherson County on Tuesday. During the pursuit, authorities said Marshall died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Law enforcement officials have not yet released additional details about the events leading up to the shooting or robbery. The case remains under active investigation.
