Fatal Gloucester County murder-suicide death of Michelle Whiting – Obituary
Michelle Whiting, a mother of three from New Jersey, was identified by loved ones as the woman killed in a suspected murder-suicide that took place over the weekend in Gloucester County.
Authorities discovered the remains of a man and a woman inside a home on Tranquility Court in Washington Township early Sunday morning after receiving 911 calls about an explosion and fire. The residence was fully engulfed in flames when emergency personnel arrived, and investigators later concluded the blaze was deliberately set.
According to the Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office, the woman was shot in the head before the fire began, and the man died from self-inflicted injuries sustained in the fire. An accelerant was found at the scene, and the gas line had been intentionally tampered with to release natural gas throughout the home.
Family members confirmed the woman’s identity as Michelle Whiting via social media and a GoFundMe page established by her longtime friend, Tammy Ventura. Ventura stated the man involved in the case was Whiting’s ex-boyfriend.
Whiting, who worked as a leasing agent at an apartment complex, was remembered as a kind-hearted and resilient woman. “She always had a smile, no matter how hard things got,” Ventura said. “Her kids meant everything to her.”
Ventura shared that she and Whiting had been friends for 25 years, initially bonding as neighbors and young mothers. She recalled fond memories of concerts and Whiting’s uncanny ability to win tickets to major shows.
Funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will support Whiting’s children and help cover funeral expenses.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with relevant information to contact Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Detective Allen Williams at 856-384-5622 or Washington Township Detective Matthew Laudenslager at 856-589-0330, ext. 1176. Tips can also be sent via email to [email protected].
