Fatal Plumas County disappearance death of William Millard – Obituary
Human remains recently found in a remote area northeast of Cromberg have been confirmed to belong to William Millard, a Plumas County man who vanished in 2017, according to the local sheriff’s department.
The remains were discovered on May 9, 2025, near Jackson Creek, a densely forested area known for its challenging terrain. Authorities reported that the site where Millard’s body was found is about half a mile from where his vehicle was abandoned eight years ago.
Investigators believe Millard’s car had broken down in 2017, prompting him to try to walk out of the area. At the time, an extensive search was launched, but no signs of him were found until this recent development.
The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Millard’s family has been informed. In a public statement, officials expressed sympathy, stating that while the outcome is heartbreaking, they hope the discovery offers some closure to his loved ones after years of unanswered questions.
There are no indications of foul play, and past reports indicated Millard had existing medical issues. Due to the condition of the remains, officials were unable to determine a specific cause of death.
The remains were located by a logging crew operating in the vicinity, who immediately contacted authorities. The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team played a key role in recovering additional remains from the scene.
