Fatal Syracuse shooting death of Donnell Hogan – Obituary
Donnell Hogan, 42, lost his life Tuesday night, May 13, 2025, during a shootout with Syracuse police inside an apartment building on the city’s North Side.
Officers were called to 212 North Townsend Street around 9:54 p.m. following reports of gunfire. Responding units were informed that three shots had been heard. Upon arriving at the scene, police encountered an active shooter situation inside the building.
Authorities say Hogan opened fire inside the apartment complex. Officers entered and exchanged gunfire with him. Hogan was found on the second floor and was pronounced dead at the scene. A handgun was discovered nearby.
While it remains unclear if Hogan was shot by officers, the New York State Attorney General’s Office has launched an initial investigation into the incident, as required by state law for any fatalities involving law enforcement.
Hawley Avenue between North McBride and North Townsend Streets remained blocked off as police and crime scene investigators continued their work. The location of the shooting, the Moses Dewitt House apartments, is managed by Christopher Community, which offers housing for low- and moderate-income residents.
Court records show that in 2011, Hogan served a seven-year prison sentence for criminal possession of a weapon.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Syracuse Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division at (315) 442-5222.
