Fatal Westlake encampment death of Lucrecia Macias Barajas – Obituary

Lucrecia Macias Barajas, a 46-year-old U.S. Army veteran and mother of six, was found dead inside a tent at a homeless encampment in Westlake on Monday, May 12, 2025.

Authorities say her body, along with that of an unidentified man, was discovered after Barajas’ daughter tore open the tent on Huntley Drive, which had been locked from the inside. According to police, dogs inside the tent had begun feeding on the deceased individuals.

Local residents reported that Barajas’ daughter had been searching for her mother for several days. A video posted online captured the painful moment when relatives confirmed the woman’s death. Barajas was later identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner.

Neighbors expressed sorrow over the tragedy but also voiced frustration about ongoing issues with the encampment, describing it as a hotspot for drug activity. Despite multiple calls to city officials and police about the situation and signs prohibiting camping, residents said little action had been taken.

The incident coincided with Governor Gavin Newsom’s renewed call for cities and counties to take stronger action on encampments. Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, who represents the district, issued a statement offering condolences and pledging cooperation with local departments and community groups to address the crisis.
