Fatal Olympia overdose deaths of Phillip Rawlings and Ryan Taal – Obituary

Phillip Rawlings, 38, and Ryan Taal, 35, have been identified as the two men who died early Monday, May 12, in downtown Olympia following suspected drug overdoses, according to the Thurston County Coroner.

Authorities were called to the 100 block of Legion Way Southeast shortly after midnight when a member of the group contacted 911, reporting that several people had ingested a substance and were likely overdosing. The caller specifically requested Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.

Police and fire crews responded to Stuart Place, an apartment complex located near Sylvester Park. When they arrived, one individual was found outside, another in a stairwell, and three others inside an apartment unit.

Despite medical efforts at the scene, Rawlings and Taal were pronounced dead. Three other individuals were transported to the hospital for further evaluation.

Investigators have not yet released the specific substance involved. The case remains under review.
