Fatal Hopewell Township motorcycle crash death of Robert Sparano – Obituary

Patrol Officer Robert Sparano, 23, of the Bordentown Township Police Department, was killed in a motorcycle crash Monday evening in Hopewell Township, authorities confirmed.

 

The incident occurred around 7:09 p.m. on May 12 near the I-295 interchange. Sparano, who was off duty at the time, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on Route 31 when he attempted to switch lanes and hit the back of a GMC pickup truck driven by a 26-year-old Hopewell Township resident. The collision threw Sparano from the motorcycle, and he was declared deceased at the scene. The truck driver was unharmed.

 

Multiple agencies responded to the crash, including police from Hopewell, Pennington, and Ewing, along with the Pennington Fire Department and Capital Health EMS. The Hopewell Township Police Department is leading the investigation, with Officer Paul Alvaro and Detective Michael Makwinski working the case alongside the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

 

Sparano had recently joined the Bordentown police force, following in the footsteps of his father, Robert “Bob” Sparano, a retired sergeant with Hopewell Township Police who served for 28 years.
