Fatal Boulder Islands suicide death of Shawn Frehner – Obituary

Dr. Shawn Frehner, a 56-year-old veterinarian from Nevada, was found deceased near the Boulder Islands at Lake Mead on April 18, 2025, following an extensive search effort.

Authorities confirmed that Dr. Frehner’s death was the result of drowning, with the presence of the euthanasia drug Pentobarbital contributing to his death. The manner was ruled a suicide by the Clark County Coroner’s Office. His identity was verified through dental records the day after his body was found.

Dr. Frehner had been reported missing nearly two weeks before his body was recovered. His personal items, including his phone, keys, and wallet, were discovered inside his parked vehicle near the lake, prompting the National Park Service to lead a large-scale search operation.

His disappearance occurred shortly after a video surfaced online allegedly showing him kicking a horse while attempting to administer anesthesia. The incident, which took place at a property about 60 miles west of Las Vegas, led to a public outcry and a criminal investigation by the Nye County Sheriff’s Office.

Dr. Frehner had responded to the backlash by stating on social media that the kick seen in the video was not meant as abuse but as an effort to reposition the horse to improve its breathing during sedation.

The woman who recorded the video, Shawna Gonzalez, expressed sadness over his passing but emphasized her commitment to advocating for animal welfare. The investigation into the alleged animal cruelty had been ongoing at the time of his death.
