Fatal Fremont County car crash death of Aifeng Wan – Obituary

Aifeng Wan, a 53-year-old resident of Arcadia, California, was one of seven people who tragically lost their lives in a fiery vehicle crash in Fremont County, Idaho, on May 1. The fatal incident occurred on U.S. Highway 20, near Yellowstone National Park, when a tour van carrying international visitors was struck head-on by a pickup truck that crossed into its lane.

Wan was one of six passengers riding in a Mercedes van operated by Ctour Holiday LLC when a Dodge Ram traveling westbound veered over the center line and collided with the van around 7:15 p.m. The impact caused the van to catch fire, killing Wan along with fellow passengers Ivana Wen, 28, of Milan, Italy; Jianping Li, 71, of Guangxi, China; Li Nie, 64, also of Arcadia, California; Xiaoming Jiang, 66, of Guilin, China; and the van’s driver, Yu Zhang, 30, of Eastvale, California. The seventh fatality was the pickup driver, 25-year-old Isaih Moreno from Humble, Texas.

Emergency personnel responded quickly to the scene, with bystanders assisting in pulling survivors from the burning vehicle. Three injured passengers were flown to hospitals in Bozeman, Montana, and Idaho Falls, while others with less serious injuries were transported by ground ambulance.

Investigators have not yet determined what caused the pickup to drift into the oncoming lane. Idaho State Police have described the investigation as complex due to the number of casualties and involvement of foreign nationals.

Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye praised the collaboration between her office, Ada County, and state forensic teams for ensuring accurate identification of each victim. Their coordinated efforts were key to notifying the families and honoring those lost.

The highway remained shut down for approximately seven hours during the emergency response and investigation. Officials stated that crash reconstruction and additional testing are still in progress, and the case remains open.
