Fatal Fremont County car crash death of Jianping Li – Obituary

Jianping Li, a 71-year-old resident of Guangxi, China, was one of the seven people who tragically lost their lives in a horrific collision involving a tour van and a pickup truck in Fremont County, Idaho, earlier this month. The deadly incident occurred on May 1 along U.S. Highway 20 near Yellowstone National Park.

Idaho State Police confirmed that the van, which was operated by Ctour Holiday LLC and carrying international visitors, was struck head-on by a Dodge Ram truck that crossed the center line. Jianping Li was among six occupants of the van who were killed, including fellow passengers Ivana Wen, 28, of Milan, Italy; Li Nie, 64, and Aifeng Wan, 53, both from Arcadia, California; Xiaoming Jiang, 66, of Guilin, China; and the van’s driver, Yu Zhang, 30, of Eastvale, California. The seventh victim was the truck driver, Isaih Moreno, 25, of Humble, Texas.

The crash took place around 7:15 p.m. and caused the van to catch fire shortly after the impact. The exact reason the pickup truck veered into oncoming traffic is still under investigation.

Captain Chris Weadick of the Idaho State Police emphasized the complexity of the case due to the number of victims and the presence of foreign nationals. Emergency personnel responded quickly, and bystanders assisted in pulling victims from the burning vehicle. Three of the van’s passengers were airlifted to hospitals in Montana and Idaho, while others were taken by ambulance with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye highlighted the detailed work involved in identifying the victims and praised the cooperation with state forensic teams to ensure families received accurate information about their loved ones.

The highway remained shut for several hours while investigators and emergency crews worked the scene. Authorities stated that crash analysis and further testing are ongoing, with the investigation still open.
