Fatal Fremont County car crash death of Xiaoming Jiang – Obituary
Xiaoming Jiang, a 66-year-old man from Guilin, China, was one of seven individuals killed in a tragic collision involving a tour van and a pickup truck in Fremont County, Idaho, on May 1. The crash occurred along U.S. Highway 20, not far from Yellowstone National Park, as the van was carrying international tourists through the region.
Jiang was a passenger in a Mercedes van operated by Ctour Holiday LLC when a Dodge Ram traveling in the opposite direction veered across the center line and collided with the van around 7:15 p.m. The impact ignited a fire that quickly consumed the vehicle. Xiaoming Jiang died at the scene along with five other van occupants: Ivana Wen, 28, of Milan, Italy; Jianping Li, 71, of Guangxi, China; Li Nie, 64, and Aifeng Wan, 53, both of Arcadia, California; and the van’s driver, Yu Zhang, 30, of Eastvale, California. The driver of the pickup, 25-year-old Isaih Moreno from Humble, Texas, was also killed.
The Idaho State Police continue to investigate why the truck crossed into oncoming traffic. Authorities have described the investigation as especially complex due to the number of victims and the involvement of international citizens.
Three additional passengers in the van suffered serious injuries and were flown to hospitals in Bozeman, Montana, and Idaho Falls. Others sustained less severe injuries and were taken by ambulance for further care.
Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye credited the joint efforts of her office, Ada County officials, and state forensic services in properly identifying the victims and supporting their families through the aftermath. First responders and passing motorists acted swiftly to assist survivors before the fire fully engulfed the vehicle.
The highway was closed for about seven hours while crews worked at the crash site. The Idaho State Police noted that crash reconstruction is ongoing, and lab results are pending as the investigation remains open.
