Fatal Brooklyn Bridge ship crash death of Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos – Obituary

Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos, a 23-year-old sailor from San Mateo del Mar, Oaxaca, tragically lost his life in a ship collision on New York’s Brooklyn Bridge on May 17. Marcos was aboard the Mexican Navy training vessel Cuauhtemoc when it collided with the bridge during a sailing maneuver, causing significant damage to the ship and resulting in the deaths of two crew members.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. with 277 people on board. Alongside Marcos, the other fatality was fellow Mexican Navy cadet América Yamilet Sánchez, aged 20, who was remembered by her family as a determined student aspiring to become a naval engineer. The Mexican Navy confirmed the accident caused injuries to 22 crew members, with 11 in critical condition and 9 stable.

Following the crash, the vessel was moored at Pier 36 on the East River for damage assessments and salvage planning. Authorities, including the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, with experts from nautical operations, marine engineering, and survival fields involved.

The Mexican Navy has reported that most cadets have returned to Veracruz, Mexico, while two remain in New York for medical treatment in stable condition. The accident has deeply affected the families and communities of the victims, with official condolences extended by both Mexican and local authorities.
