Fatal Santa Clarita car crash death of Daniel V. Chavira – Obituary
Daniel V. Chavira, a 21-year-old deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, was killed Monday in a three-vehicle collision while off duty in Santa Clarita. The crash occurred on San Francisquito Canyon Road in the afternoon.
Chavira suffered severe injuries and was flown to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. He had been with the LASD since May 2, 2024, and was assigned to the North County Correctional Facility. A graduate of Academy Class 476, Chavira came from a family deeply rooted in law enforcement.
His death was met with deep sorrow within the department. Sheriff Robert Luna described him as a dedicated public servant who lived for the safety and wellbeing of others. Chavira is survived by his father Rodrigo Valencia, two brothers, and several other family members who also serve in the LASD.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the cause of the crash. While others involved were transported to the hospital, the extent of their injuries remains unknown. That evening, a long procession of law enforcement vehicles escorted Chavira’s body from the hospital to the coroner’s office in Lincoln Heights.
