Fatal Brooklyn Bridge ship crash deaths of America Yamilet Sanchez and Adal Jair Marcos – Obituary
America Yamilet Sanchez, 20, and Adal Jair Marcos, both naval cadets with the Mexican Navy, tragically lost their lives when their training ship, Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Saturday evening.
The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. when the 147-foot tall-mast ship experienced a steering failure and crashed into the bridge. Both Sanchez and Marcos were positioned high up on the ship’s masts during the crash. They were fatally injured as a result, while roughly 20 other crew members suffered injuries, several of whom remain in critical condition.
Adal Jair Marcos had been on the Cuauhtémoc for nine months, having traveled to multiple countries including New Zealand and Australia. Tributes poured in from friends who described him as more than a friend — “a brother” — and expressed deep sorrow at his passing.
Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle García mourned the loss of Sanchez, sharing her condolences publicly and offering support to her family.
The Cuauhtémoc was on a commemorative voyage marking the 200th anniversary of the Mexican Navy’s historical expulsion of Spanish forces. The 170-day journey was scheduled to stop at 22 ports across 15 nations and had 277 people onboard when it departed.
Most of the crew are expected to return to Mexico on Sunday via public transportation coordinated by New York officials. The National Transportation Safety Board has launched an investigation into the cause of the collision.
