Authorities in Washington Township, New Jersey, have identified the two individuals who died in a house fire earlier this month as 59-year-old Daniel Steel and 45-year-old Michelle Whiting. The incident has been determined to be a murder-suicide.

On May 11, first responders discovered Steel deceased inside the residence, with a handgun located near his body. Whiting was found in a bedroom, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators reported evidence of an accelerant in the home and noted that the gas line had been manipulated, allowing natural gas to flow freely throughout the house. These findings support the conclusion that the fire and deaths were the result of a planned murder-suicide.
