Fatal Pickens County shooting death of Steve Crawford Whitmire – Obituary

Steve Crawford Whitmire, 68, of Liberty, was confirmed dead after being shot in the head, his remains discovered in a rural area of Pickens County.

The Pickens County Coroner’s Office identified Whitmire’s remains, found near the 500 block of Massingill Memorial Drive on the evening of Sunday, May 18. An autopsy revealed that his cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.

Whitmire had been reported missing and was connected to a man named Jeremy Lee Basquette, 32, who was involved in a recent police chase. Basquette died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound during the pursuit on May 15 near Clemson. Investigations revealed evidence linking Basquette to Whitmire’s death.

Despite Basquette’s passing, law enforcement and the coroner’s office continue to investigate the case. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
