Fatal Lewiston shooting death of Jasper Smith – Obituary

Four-year-old Jasper Smith has been identified as the young victim who died from a gunshot wound to the head early Saturday morning in Lewiston, Maine.

Authorities were called to an apartment on Pierce Street just before 5 a.m. after receiving a report about a child who had been shot. Jasper was transported to Central Maine Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:08 a.m.

Inside the apartment, police recovered a single 9mm handgun, which was registered to a 36-year-old man. At the time of the incident, several relatives were present in the residence.

Jasper’s father, who lives out of state, stated that a family member told him the boy had accidentally shot himself.

An investigation involving Maine State Police, Lewiston police, and the state’s Department of Health and Human Services is ongoing to determine the circumstances that led to the child’s death.
