Fatal Milwaukee County Jail custody death of Gabriel Muniz-Jimenez – Obituary

Authorities have confirmed that 33-year-old Gabriel Muniz-Jimenez died while in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail late Wednesday night.

According to records from the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, Muniz-Jimenez was pronounced dead at 10:56 p.m. after being found unconscious and in medical distress by his cellmate, who alerted correctional officers. This marks the second death in the facility this year.

Muniz-Jimenez had been booked into the jail in late November on felony charges related to methamphetamine possession. He was also noted in court records as needing a Spanish interpreter. When found unresponsive, officers attempted to revive him using lifesaving measures including Narcan, typically used to counteract opioid overdoses.

While the exact cause of death remains unclear, the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation. Jail authorities have not publicly commented, and the Medical Examiner’s report lists the cause of death as undetermined.

Muniz-Jimenez’s death adds to a troubling pattern at the Milwaukee County Jail, which has faced scrutiny following multiple in-custody deaths over the past few years. Issues such as poor suicide watch protocols and use-of-force concerns were noted in a recent audit. Though progress has been reported in addressing these problems, with over 70% of corrective actions reportedly met, gaps in compliance still remain.

Reform efforts at the jail are ongoing, including policy updates and renovations aimed at improving inmate safety.
