Fatal Rock Hill shooting death of Roger Baskins – Obituary
Roger Baskins, 52, of Lancaster and Charlotte, was charged with murder after a violent rampage that ended with the fatal shooting of 65-year-old business owner Charles Wilburn Presler in Rock Hill, South Carolina. The incident unfolded following a family dispute on Wednesday evening and led to Baskins being arrested later that night.
Authorities say the violence began at a home on Memorial Park Road when Baskins threatened family members with a gun during an argument, fired shots into a relative’s car, and damaged two other vehicles with a car battery. After fleeing on foot, Baskins was located and arrested by police following a brief chase.
Investigators found that Baskins had stolen a burgundy 1997 Toyota 4-Runner belonging to Presler. Upon checking on Presler’s welfare, officers discovered him dead from a gunshot wound inside his business near the scene of the initial family disturbance. Baskins was found with Presler’s documents and a pistol, and it appears the victim had been robbed.
Baskins faces multiple charges including murder, armed robbery, burglary, weapons offenses, and malicious destruction of property. A magistrate denied him bond Thursday afternoon.
Those who knew Presler remember him as a devoted father, husband, and grandfather who worked closely with his wife and supported children with autism in their community.
