Shelly Smit dies in fatal Rock Valley house fire

Fatal Rock Valley house fire death of Shelly Smit – Obituary

Shelly Smit, 61, tragically lost her life in a house fire early Monday morning, May 19, in rural Rock Valley, Iowa.

Firefighters from the Rock Valley Fire Department were dispatched around 6 a.m. to a residence located at 2096 340th Street, several miles southwest of town. Upon arrival, the structure was engulfed in flames.

During their response, emergency crews located Shelly Smit in the basement of the home. Sadly, she was declared deceased at the scene.

The homeowner, 67-year-old Mike Smit, sustained injuries and was transported to Hegg Health Center for medical attention.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
