Dirkiesdorp, Mpumalanga Man Arrested in Piet Retief for Murder of Woman Over Goat Dispute
DIRKIESDORP, MPUMALANGA — A 41-year-old man, whose identity has not yet been released, was arrested in Piet Retief in connection with the brutal murder of a 46-year-old woman following a dispute over a goat.
According to the South African Police Service, the suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday, May 7, at his residence near Dirkiesdorp. Authorities say the incident began on Saturday, May 3, when the victim went to confront the man after learning that her goat had been illegally sold to him.
The woman never returned home, prompting her family to report her missing on Sunday, May 4. Investigators later discovered that the suspect had murdered her before she reached his home, buried her in a shallow grave, and attempted to mislead her family with fabricated text messages using her phone.
The suspect is currently facing charges of murder, robbery, and defeating the ends of justice, and appeared before the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Police have not ruled out additional charges as the investigation continues.
