Fatal Dallas car-pedestrian accident death of Jose Armando Garcia – Obituary

Jose Armando Garcia, a 9-year-old boy, tragically lost his life on Thursday after being struck by a vehicle while crossing the street near Felix Botello Elementary School in Dallas. His twin sister, Kayla, and their mother, Deyaneira Ledesma, were also hit and sustained injuries.

According to witnesses, the family was attempting to cross a busy four-lane road away from the designated crosswalk and without the assistance of a crossing guard. The driver of the pickup truck, described as being in his late 80s, told authorities he was unable to stop in time.

A crossing guard at the South Marsalis Avenue and East 12th Street intersection noted that many parents and children frequently ignore the designated crosswalk, opting instead to cross mid-block.

Cynthia Rocha, a parent at the school, acknowledged that many in the community are guilty of doing the same.

Dallas ISD arranged for grief counselors to be available at Felix Botello Elementary School and the hospitals where the injured were taken. Friday marked the final day of the school year, and additional staff were present along South Marsalis Avenue to encourage safer crossing habits.

The crossing guard on duty during the incident took Friday off, reportedly shaken by the event. Police have stated that no criminal charges are expected against the driver. A relative mentioned he is deeply affected and heartbroken.

Community members are organizing a vigil to honor Jose at 7 p.m. Friday in front of the school. A fundraising page has also been launched to support the family.
