Fatal Reeves County shooting death of Jose Marin-Ramos – Obituary
Jose Marin-Ramos, a 36-year-old man from Teocaltiche, Jalisco, Mexico, lost his life in a deadly shooting that took place in Reeves County, Texas. Authorities say the incident happened on Sunday, May 18, at the Wild West Trucking yard located along County Road 401 in Pecos.
Reeves County deputies responded to reports of a man being shot. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered Marin-Ramos had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head. The area was promptly secured, and investigators from the Reeves County Criminal Investigations Division were called to process the site. The Texas Rangers and Pecos Police Department also provided support in the investigation.
Officials revealed that the suspect, 35-year-old Salvador Cervantes-Ortiz, a mechanic originally from Uruapan, Michoacan, Mexico, had been staying in an RV at the trucking yard. According to the sheriff’s office, Cervantes-Ortiz and Marin-Ramos had been socializing and drinking with others outside the RV before the incident took place.
During the gathering, Cervantes-Ortiz reportedly emerged from his RV armed with a .380 caliber pistol. Witnesses stated he inserted a magazine into the weapon, chambered a round, and pointed it at Marin-Ramos before firing a single shot, which fatally struck the victim.
Following the shooting, Cervantes-Ortiz initially fled but later returned to the scene with help from trucking yard staff and witnesses. He surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody by law enforcement.
Cervantes-Ortiz was booked into the Reeves County Jail on a charge of first-degree murder. His bail was set at $1 million by Justice of the Peace Liberty Wofford, and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed an immigration hold on him.
Officials believe this was an isolated event, and there is no evidence linking the individuals involved to any gang-related activities.
