Michele Durante, a 50-year-old father of two from Morcone, lost his life in a tragic head-on collision on State Road 87 late Wednesday evening, May 22, 2025. The fatal crash occurred near the Pontelandolfo junction while Durante was driving his Peugeot 206 toward Benevento.

Reports suggest that a Mercedes A-Class coming from the opposite direction crossed into Durante’s lane, causing a devastating frontal collision. The impact proved fatal for Durante, who was declared dead at the scene by emergency responders from Morcone. He had reportedly just set out to pick up his son arriving from Naples at the Benevento train station.

Emergency services, including Carabinieri from the Morcone station and firefighters from Benevento, responded quickly. They worked for hours to extract Durante’s body and clear the wreckage. His remains were later transported to the Rummo morgue under the orders of the duty magistrate.

The two men in the Mercedes, aged 23 and 28 and from Casalduni and Pontelandolfo, were en route to Campobasso for a night shift at a local plant. They sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Durante, a longtime employee at Ficomirrors, was remembered by friends as a kind, respectful, and resilient individual who had faced life’s challenges with strength and dedication to his children. His untimely death marks another tragedy on State Road 87, a highway notorious for fatal accidents despite past efforts to improve its safety.
