Fatal Polk County alligator attack death of Cynthia Diekema – Obituary

Cynthia Diekema, a 61-year-old woman from Davenport, Florida, lost her life after a deadly encounter with an alligator while canoeing in a central Florida lake on the afternoon of Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

She and her husband were paddling near the area where Tiger Creek connects with the western edge of Lake Kissimmee in Polk County. The attack occurred around 4 p.m., when their canoe passed over an alligator resting in shallow waters about two feet deep. The reptile reacted violently, tipping the canoe and throwing both occupants into the lake.

While her husband managed to escape without injury, Cynthia was bitten and dragged underwater. Despite his efforts to save her, he was unable to prevent the tragic outcome.

Her body was discovered later by a Polk County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, and retrieved by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) personnel. The alligator involved, which measured 11 feet 4 inches, was located by a licensed trapper and subsequently euthanized.

FWC Executive Director Roger Young expressed his condolences and emphasized that while such attacks are rare, they highlight the unpredictable nature of wild animals. He reminded the public to be especially vigilant during seasons of heightened alligator activity and to always maintain a safe distance from wildlife.
