Fatal St. Petersburg stabbing death of Dustin Hedenberg – Obituary
A man identified as 40-year-old Dustin Hedenberg died Friday evening following a stabbing that occurred during an altercation outside Ahi Sushi in downtown St. Petersburg.
According to police, the incident unfolded around 5:48 p.m. near 364 1st Avenue North. Hedenberg was found with severe injuries and was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital, where he later succumbed to his wounds. His family has been notified.
Investigators say the events began when Hedenberg acted aggressively and reportedly assaulted someone at the Scientology Center located at 336 1st Avenue North. Shortly afterward, he arrived at Ahi Sushi, where he engaged in a physical confrontation with the restaurant’s owner, 50-year-old Fayun Zhang.
During the confrontation, authorities say Hedenberg attacked Zhang, knocking him down and striking him repeatedly. In the course of defending himself, Zhang allegedly used a screwdriver to stab Hedenberg in the face.
At this time, Zhang has not been charged. Detectives are continuing the investigation and will consult with the State Attorney’s Office to determine if criminal charges are appropriate.
A portion of 1st Avenue North between 3rd and 4th Streets was temporarily closed while police conducted their investigation.
