An early morning accident in Springfield Township, Ohio, claimed the life of 18-year-old Isabelle Grubaugh of Akron, according to authorities from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
The tragic incident occurred around 1:26 a.m. on Massillon Road (State Route 241), just north of Clayben Drive. Officials say a Volkswagen Jetta was traveling south when it veered off the right side of the road, hitting a guardrail and then a utility pole. The impact caused the car to overturn before coming to a stop upright in the roadway.
Grubaugh, who was riding in the passenger seat, died from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver, a 22-year-old man, survived with injuries that were not considered life-threatening and was transported to Summa Health – Akron City Hospital for treatment.
Authorities suspect that alcohol or drugs may have played a role in the crash. Neither Grubaugh nor the driver was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident, according to the OSHP. The crash remains under active investigation.
