John Callas, a 64-year-old man from Centereach, lost his life Saturday night following a single-vehicle accident in Manorville, Suffolk County, police reported.

Authorities stated that Callas was behind the wheel of a 2011 Ford van traveling north on Schultz Road around 10:10 p.m. when he veered off the roadway and collided with a large boulder. The crash occurred between Wading River Manor Road and North Street.

Emergency responders transported Callas to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash, including whether speed may have been a contributing factor.

His death was one of multiple traffic fatalities reported in Suffolk County over the weekend, highlighting a concerning trend on Long Island’s roads.
