Fatal Shelby, North Carolina car crash death of Derek Hegge – Obituary

Derek Hegge, a 57-year-old resident of Shelby, North Carolina, was killed Saturday night after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross N.C. Highway 180 near Pleasant Hill Church Road.

The collision took place around 9:30 p.m., close to the Ingles store in the Patterson Springs area. According to First Sgt. J.R. Crotts of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Mr. Hegge was crossing the roadway when a white Nissan traveling south on N.C. 180 hit him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities noted that Mr. Hegge was wearing dark clothing at the time, and there is suspicion he may have been impaired, though toxicology results are still pending. The driver of the vehicle will not face charges, as investigators determined the pedestrian was unlawfully in the roadway.

“It’s a tragic situation,” Sgt. Crotts said, noting the difficult conditions at the time of the incident.
