Fatal East Baton Rouge Parish shooting death of Kayelyn Ford – Obituary

Authorities in East Baton Rouge Parish are investigating the death of 22-year-old Kayelyn Ford, who was shot and killed outside her apartment early Monday, May 19.

The incident occurred at the Tanglewood Apartments on Hooper Road. According to deputies, Ford had contacted law enforcement around 3:20 a.m. because she suspected her ex-boyfriend, Brandon Bell, was attempting to enter her residence using an old key. Deputies arrived and checked the apartment but found no one inside. Ford and a friend then told deputies they planned to leave the area for their safety.

However, shortly after the deputies left, Bell reportedly emerged from a wooded area and ambushed Ford as she was exiting the apartment. He opened fire, fatally wounding her before turning the gun on himself. Ford was pronounced dead at the scene, and Bell was taken to the hospital in critical condition, with officials indicating he is unlikely to survive.

Investigators say Bell had stolen a Suburban belonging to his grandparents to travel to Baton Rouge. The vehicle theft had been reported to the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, which alerted East Baton Rouge deputies.

Records show Bell was previously arrested in April for domestic abuse battery. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate the case.
