Fatal Kurtistown pedestrian crash death of Maxwell Robertson Sherwood – Obituary
Maxwell Robertson Sherwood, a 21-year-old from Kea‘au, was struck and killed by a vehicle on the evening of May 16 in Kurtistown, Hawaii. The crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. along Orchidland Drive near its junction with 36th Avenue.
Police say Sherwood was walking in the roadway when a 2010 Jeep Wrangler traveling eastbound hit him. He was transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the Jeep, identified as 30-year-old Dallas Brooks, was unharmed in the incident but was arrested on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide and driving under the influence. Witnesses reported that several drivers had swerved to avoid Sherwood before the collision, noting he was not within a designated crosswalk.
Authorities suspect that alcohol contributed to the crash, which resulted in a temporary closure of the area for more than two hours during the investigation.
