Fatal Aurora shooting death of Rashaud Terrelle Johnson – Obituary
Rashaud Terrelle Johnson, 32, from Aurora, was fatally shot by an Aurora police officer on May 12 in a parking lot near East 56th Avenue and Himalaya Street, close to Denver International Airport. His identity was confirmed by the Adams County Coroner’s Office.
Police say a worker from a private parking facility called 911 around 3 p.m. to report a man trespassing and allegedly attempting to break into vehicles, raising concerns about customer and employee safety. However, records show that officers did not arrive on the scene until more than two hours later, with an officer dispatched at 5:18 p.m.
According to Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain, when the officer arrived, he approached Johnson to speak with him. Johnson then reportedly attacked the officer, who has four years of experience on the force. The officer attempted to subdue Johnson using a Taser, but when Johnson allegedly got on top of him, the officer managed to break free and fired his weapon.
After the shooting, other officers arrived and gave medical aid to Johnson at the scene before he was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The officer involved was also hospitalized for injuries sustained during the altercation.
The incident is under investigation by a Critical Incident Review Team that excludes Aurora police personnel. Additionally, an internal review is underway to determine why there was such a delay in dispatching officers and why only one officer was initially sent.
