Fatal Long Island pool death of Matthew Zoll – Obituary
Authorities reported that Matthew Zoll, 23, wanted in connection with the murder of his father, Joseph Zoll, has likely been found dead in a residential pool on Long Island. Matthew had been missing since November 2024, when his father was discovered fatally stabbed in their Rocky Point home.
On Sunday, a homeowner in East Shoreham uncovered a body in their pool after removing the cover for the season. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina indicated there is a strong chance the remains belong to Matthew Zoll, though DNA tests and an autopsy are pending to confirm the identity and cause of death.
Joseph Zoll, 61, was found dead in his home on November 9, 2024. Matthew was not present when the body was discovered and quickly became the main suspect in the case. Investigators learned that Matthew crashed a vehicle near the William Floyd Parkway and Route 25A intersection shortly after the murder, which prompted an extensive search in nearby wooded areas including Brookhaven State Park.
The pool where the body was found is located about half a mile south of the crash site, in East Shoreham. Police continue to investigate the case as they await further forensic results. It was also reported that Matthew had been diagnosed with schizophrenia prior to the events, and he had previously gone missing briefly in April 2024 before being found.
Neighbors expressed shock at the discovery, noting the unusual circumstances around the pool cover. Authorities remain focused on confirming all details to close the case.
