Fatal Kelleys Island car crash death of Wesley S. Finley – Obituary

A tragic accident on Kelleys Island claimed the life of 24-year-old Wesley S. Finley from East Bernstadt, Kentucky, after his vehicle overturned and ended up in Lake Erie during the early hours of Memorial Day, according to authorities from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).

The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on May 26 along West Lakeshore Drive, just west of Huntington Street. Investigators say Finley was driving a 2000 Ford Mustang heading westbound when he lost control and veered off the left side of the road.

The car collided with several metal fenceposts, struck a deck, and hit rocks before flipping over and coming to a stop partially submerged in Lake Erie. Finley died at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

OSHP noted that Finley was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. The investigation remains ongoing, and it is not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.

No other injuries were reported in the incident. Emergency responders assisting at the crash site included the Kelleys Island Police Department, Kelleys Island Fire Department and EMS, the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Erie County Coroner Dr. Baxter, and Sugar Ridge Towing.
