Fatal Jacksonville hit-and-run death of Brandon Venegas – Obituary
Brandon Venegas, 40, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run incident late Monday night in the parking lot of a Walgreens located at 7224 Merrill Road in the Arlington area of Jacksonville, according to authorities and his family.
Officers from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene around 11:45 p.m. after receiving a call about an unresponsive individual. Upon arrival, emergency personnel from the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department confirmed Venegas had died at the scene.
Investigators believe the vehicle involved struck and dragged Venegas before fleeing. Authorities have yet to identify the suspect and are requesting the public’s help in locating the driver responsible.
Venegas’ cousin, Misty, expressed deep sorrow and anger, saying the suspect could have called for help instead of abandoning him. “You left him there to die,” she said, urging the person responsible to come forward. Misty initially feared Brandon was involved in a different accident before learning he had been killed in a parking lot.
She warned the driver that surveillance cameras are likely to have recorded the incident and vowed that the family would not stop until justice is served.
Walgreens acknowledged the incident and stated they are working with law enforcement. However, the company declined to release any surveillance footage related to the case.
This tragedy marks the 70th traffic-related fatality in Duval County so far this year. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
