Collin Smith dies in fatal Lake Monona drowning

Fatal Lake Monona drowning death of Collin Smith – Obituary

Collin Smith, a 25-year-old Madison resident, has been identified as the man who drowned in Lake Monona, according to the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office. Authorities confirmed his passing on May 23, following the recovery of his body from the lake on Friday evening.

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, Smith was remembered by loved ones as a kind-hearted individual, admired and cherished by many. His family shared that his memory will live on through his parents, three sisters, his beloved cat, extended family, colleagues, and the many friends who brought joy and meaning to his life.

Known for his ability to communicate clearly and with humor, Smith had a unique charm and a generous spirit. His family recalled how he consistently treated others with respect and compassion, often living by the principle of asking for help in ways that made others want to assist.

Smith was involved in a boating incident that led to his drowning. According to Bruce’s Legacy, a nonprofit search and recovery group, four men departed from Olin Park Boat Launch—two in a small sailboat and two in a kayak tethered to it. The group had only two life jackets between them. When strong winds overturned the sailboat, all four ended up in the water. One made it to shore, and three clung to the waterlogged kayak amid choppy waves. Smith lost his grip, while the two wearing life vests were later rescued by the Madison Fire Department.

On Friday, a witness who was part of the boating group returned with Bruce’s Legacy to share details of the incident, helping expand the search area. Smith’s body was found later that day at a depth of 40 feet.

Bruce’s Legacy and the Smith family expressed gratitude to all who aided in the search, including the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin K9 SOS, the Wisconsin DNR, and others. The organization also emphasized the importance of always wearing life jackets while on the water.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Smith’s death.
