David Wilkins Jr. lost his life early Tuesday morning when his vehicle crashed along the Katy Freeway service road near Mason Road amid heavy rainfall. The incident happened around 1:45 a.m., as storms created hazardous driving conditions throughout the area.

Wilkins was behind the wheel of a 2023 Dodge Challenger heading westbound when he attempted to take the Mason Road exit. According to investigators from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the vehicle encountered a patch of standing water, causing him to lose control due to excessive speed for the weather conditions.

The car veered off the road, went into a grassy median, and slammed into a tree. Wilkins was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, who has not been publicly identified, was transported to Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the crash.
