Fatal Rockport hit-and-run crash death of James Guthrie – Obituary

James Guthrie, a 51-year-old resident of Rockport, was killed in a hit-and-run incident while riding his bicycle along Business 35, about half a mile north of US 188, on May 23. Texas Highway Patrol identified him after responding to the scene following reports of the crash.

Authorities say Guthrie was heading southbound when a vehicle veered out of its lane and struck him. The collision threw him from the bicycle and into a ditch. A witness reported seeing an unidentified man at the scene rummaging through Guthrie’s pockets and taking items before fleeing.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be a 2018 to 2021 BMW X4, with visible damage to the front grill and area between the headlights. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and has not yet been located.

Troopers continue their investigation and are urging anyone with information to contact the Department of Public Safety at 361-698-5600.
