Fatal west of Hancock motorcycle crash death of Kenneth Appel – Obituary
Kenneth Appel, the 65-year-old founder and organizer of the East Coast Sturgis motorcycle rally in Little Orleans, lost his life in a motorcycle crash on the evening of Monday, May 19, just west of Hancock.
Maryland State Police reported that the incident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. when officers from the Cumberland Barrack were dispatched to the intersection of Orleans Road and High Germany Road following a traffic collision.
Authorities determined that a pickup truck, driven by a 50-year-old man and heading south on Orleans Road, collided with a motorcycle that was northbound on the same stretch of road.
The driver of the pickup was transported to UPMC Western Maryland for medical care, while Kenneth Appel was declared dead at the scene by emergency responders.
Appel was well known for founding and hosting the East Coast Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Little Orleans. The upcoming rally, scheduled for August 6 through August 10, marks its 22nd year.
