Fatal Nevada County river accident death of Rebecca Heinowitz – Obituary
Rebecca Heinowitz, a 50-year-old woman from Barrytown, New York, has been confirmed as the individual who went missing after falling into the South Yuba River on Saturday evening. She was last seen struggling in the turbulent waters just upstream from the Highway 49 South Yuba River Bridge.
Emergency crews from Nevada County responded to reports around 8:30 p.m. that night but were unable to locate her despite extensive search operations. The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office said the search resumed Tuesday and spanned from the bridge area downstream to Bridgeport, about five and a half miles away, utilizing both drones and California Highway Patrol aerial support.
Described as a white woman, approximately 5 feet 3 inches tall, with black hair and brown eyes, Heinowitz was last seen wearing a black two-piece swimsuit, according to law enforcement.
The river’s dangerous conditions—swift, icy, and fast-moving water—have made rescue and recovery efforts difficult. Fire Chief Jason Robitaille expressed condolences to Heinowitz’s family, noting that the South Yuba River presents serious risks even for experienced swimmers due to its slippery rocks and strong currents.
Authorities are strongly urging the public to stay out of the water while the river remains perilously high and fast due to seasonal snowmelt. Officials continue to advise people to enjoy the scenery from a safe distance.
Support and crisis resources are available through local and national services for those affected by this incident.
