Ted Grantham dies in fatal Croydon house fire
Fatal Croydon house fire death of Ted Grantham – Obituary
An early morning fire in Sydney’s Inner West has led to the death of 80-year-old Ted Grantham. The blaze broke out around 4 a.m. on Irrara Street in Croydon, prompting emergency services to respond swiftly. Fire crews managed to extinguish the flames, but the home was severely damaged and the roof eventually collapsed.
Grantham, who was known in his community as the organist at the local church and a devoted father and husband, was found deceased inside the residence after the fire was brought under control.
Authorities are treating the incident as suspicious. Investigators began searching for a 50-year-old man, a relative who lived with Grantham, in connection with the case. The man was located and arrested in Woy Woy later that evening around 7:40 p.m. Police say he was found with a concealed machete and was taken to Gosford Police Station for questioning. As of now, no charges have been filed.
Detectives from Burwood are leading the investigation. Superintendent Christine McDonald praised the rapid coordination of officers across the state, stressing that although the cause of the fire remains uncertain, it is not believed to be gang-related or linked to any other recent fires.
An elderly woman, also believed to be a relative and present at the house the night before, is cooperating with investigators. Police had not received any prior calls to the address before the incident occurred.
