CHARLESTON, WEST Virginia — Jacob Fields, an 18-year-old resident of Charleston, was arrested in Kanawha City in connection with the accidental shooting that led to the death of a Marmet woman early Tuesday morning.

According to the Charleston Police Department, Fields was taken into custody on Tuesday at the scene of the incident, a Sheetz gas station on the 5600 block of MacCorkle Avenue Southeast. Authorities say the incident occurred around 12:10 a.m., when Fields was sitting at a gas pump wiping down the barrel of his firearm. The gun discharged, and the bullet struck 42-year-old Tiffany Clerenia Adkins in the back of the head as she walked by.

Adkins had just exited her vehicle to pump gas and was walking toward the gas station’s entrance when the shooting occurred. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

Fields was transported to a local detention facility and is currently facing charges of wanton endangerment and involuntary manslaughter related to the incident.
