David Maynard and his missing family found year after fatal Alaska Kachemak Bay boating accident
Fatal Kachemak Bay boating accident death of David Maynard – Obituary
David Maynard, 42, from Waco, Texas, was among four family members who vanished in August 2023 while boating in Kachemak Bay near Homer, Alaska. Nearly a year after their disappearance, authorities have recovered their sunken vessel and human remains believed to belong to the missing family.
Maynard was with his wife Mary, 37, and their two sons, Colton, 11, and Brantley, 8, on a 28-foot aluminum boat when it capsized around 7 p.m. approximately 16 miles west of the Homer Spit. The U.S. Coast Guard conducted a search operation at the time but suspended efforts after nearly 24 hours due to limited findings and adverse conditions.
Initial search attempts by sonar yielded no results. Months later, in April, additional support from various organizations reignited the search. In early May, a boat matching the missing vessel’s description was discovered 180 feet underwater. A remotely operated vehicle confirmed it was the same boat the Maynard family had been on.
Between May 27 and 28, dive teams recovered three sets of human remains from the wreck. The remains have been sent to the state medical examiner’s office for confirmation and autopsy.
The family had been declared legally deceased by an Alaska jury in October, a few months following their disappearance.
