Diondre Overton, a former Clemson University wide receiver, was shot and killed early Saturday morning in Greensboro, North Carolina, according to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office. He was 26 years old.
Authorities responded to a call about a noise disturbance around 2:30 a.m., and while on the way, they were alerted that gunfire had occurred. Upon arrival, deputies found Overton and administered emergency medical aid, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Officials have said the shooting appears to be an isolated incident, and an investigation is ongoing.
Overton was a key part of Clemson’s football success during his college years, contributing to two national championship teams and four ACC titles between 2016 and 2019. He finished his collegiate career with 52 receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns in 51 appearances.
In his senior year, Overton had his most productive season, notching 22 catches for 352 yards and three touchdowns. One of his standout performances came against Boston College in 2019, where he recorded three touchdowns on just three receptions totaling 119 yards. He also served as a team captain and earned Academic All-ACC honors during that season.
After leaving Clemson, Overton pursued a professional football career that included stints with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the Canadian Football League, the Vienna Vikings in Austria, the USFL’s Philadelphia Stars and Pittsburgh Maulers, and most recently, the Memphis Showboats of the UFL.
He was a multi-sport athlete at Walter Hines Page Senior High School in Greensboro and graduated from Clemson in 2019 with a degree in sports communication.
News of Overton’s death drew tributes from teammates and the Clemson community. Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, a former Clemson teammate, shared his grief in an Instagram story, saying, “Brotha I miss you already man. I love you 5L. I’m hurtin bad bout this right now.”
Clemson’s football program expressed condolences in a public message, stating their sorrow and offering support to Overton’s loved ones.
