Fatal Alton shooting death of Donald R. Lane – Obituary
Donald R. Lane, 41, was identified as the man killed during a shooting that occurred Wednesday night at the Alton Acres housing complex in Alton.
At about 9:33 p.m. on May 28, officers from the Alton Police Department responded to reports of multiple gunshots in the 3100 block of Lawn Street. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered Lane in a vehicle with a gunshot wound. Police officers began first aid until emergency medical personnel from the Alton Fire Department arrived and transported Lane to a nearby hospital. Sadly, he did not survive his injuries.
Investigators marked at least 17 pieces of evidence in and around a Ford Fiesta near the scene, primarily spent bullet casings. The Illinois State Police sent crime scene experts to help process the evidence that evening.
While the investigation continued at the scene, authorities were informed that another individual suffering from a gunshot wound had arrived at OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center. That person was later moved to a hospital in St. Louis for further treatment.
Preliminary findings suggest the shooting was not random but the result of a conflict between people who knew each other. Officers cordoned off a large portion of the street, where they placed numbered markers on spent shell casings scattered across the road, inside the vehicle, and in a nearby parking lot. A cellphone was also found close to one of the casings.
In addition to the Alton Police and Illinois State Police, assistance was provided by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, East Alton Police Department, and the Wood River Police Department.
