Gary J. Moyer, 73, of South Whitehall Township, was fatally shot by police during a standoff at his home Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities from Lehigh County reported that the incident began around 1 p.m. at Moyer’s residence on North 38th Street. Despite police commands to drop the rifle he was carrying, Moyer moved toward officers. When less-lethal methods failed to stop him, police fired approximately six shots, resulting in Moyer’s death. He was pronounced dead shortly after 3 p.m. at the scene.
The Lehigh County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Moyer died from gunshot wounds, with an autopsy scheduled for Friday. Officials also noted that Moyer suffered from chronic health conditions, and a note was found inside his home after the incident.
The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by several agencies, including the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, the Homicide Task Force, Pennsylvania State Police Forensics Services, and the Coroner’s Office.
