Fatal Mpumalanga car crash death of Happy Shakwane – Obituary

Happy Shakwane, a 46-year-old woman from KaMagugu, lost her life yesterday morning when she was struck by a vehicle while jogging along the R40 near the University of Mpumalanga turn-off.

Her husband, Oral Shakwane, confirmed her identity and said she routinely ran the same route every morning. He described the moment he arrived at the scene, initially hoping she might have survived, only to be devastated upon realizing the truth. “It felt unreal, like a nightmare. She was everything to our family – strong, joyful, and always the one holding us together,” he shared.

She is survived by her husband, their son, her mother, and several siblings. The family has yet to make funeral arrangements, as they are in the process of retrieving her body from the state mortuary.

Oral also called for a full investigation, urging authorities to bring accountability for his wife’s tragic death.

According to Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the details surrounding the crash remain limited, but a formal inquiry is underway. Mmusi also extended condolences to Happy’s family on behalf of the department.
