Fatal Brooklet shooting death of James Lee Mayo – Obituary

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the deaths of 37-year-old James Lee Mayo and his daughter, following a tragic incident that took place on the evening of Tuesday, May 27, 2025, in Brooklet, Bulloch County.

Authorities from the Brooklet Police Department and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Brooklet City Park around 7:45 p.m. after receiving a report about a child found unresponsive inside a locked vehicle.

Upon entering the vehicle, officers discovered a 9-year-old girl deceased in the backseat with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. In the front seat, they found James Lee Mayo also deceased, with a handgun on his lap. His wound appeared to be self-inflicted.

Mayo was the father of the young girl, identified as Emily Grace Mayo. Both bodies were transported to the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Pooler for further examination.

The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
